Pakistan: Pakistan: Kohistan avalanche death toll rises to 102

MANSEHRA: The death toll from Kohistan's avalanche rose to 102 as relief and rescue operation launched by the army and National Disaster Management Authority continued on Saturday.

With weather having improved in the Kandian valley, helicopters were able to fly to the main area hit by the disaster.

About 200 local people, most of them students of seminaries, took part in rescue operation in the Sari village where many houses were buried under snow.

Lt-Col Asif Ghafoor, who is supervising the operation, told this correspondent that with the recovery of more bodies the number of people killed in the area had risen to 102.

He said the operation was being carried out from Puttan tehsil of Kohistan district and scores of critically injured people, including women had been airlifted.

Colonel Asif said that helicopters had airdropped foodstuff, other essential items and stoves for about 250 families.

He said a six-member medical team from the King Abdullah hospital and Red Cross was providing medical care to the affected people and so far members of 72 families had been treated.
